What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture originated in China over 5,000 years ago and is based on the belief living animals have a vital energy called "Qi" (pronounced chee) that flows throughout the body along energy meridians. Each of the twelve meridians is associated with a different organ system. Sickness begins whenever there is an imbalance the circulation of Qi.
The acupuncturist is able to stimulate certain areas along these "meridians" by inserting long slender needles into the skin at what are known as "acupuncture points". This is believed to stimulate the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals may either stimulate the release of additional chemicals such as hormones (which influence the body's self-regulating systems), or change the body's sensation of pain. There are over 1,000 of these points along the body. The intent of the therapy is to improve the flow of Qi and restore energy balance to the body.
